As we dive into the magic of the festive season, the chaos of the yearly Christmas shopping haul begins! Endless lists and hours of walking around shops, trying to hunt for those perfect gifts (not to mention, carrying heavy bags filled with presents!) definitely have an effect on your spine.
It’s important to take small steps to prevent placing any additional stress on your neck, shoulders, and back. Here is our quick guide to keeping your spine healthy and happy while you hunt for those perfect Christmas goodies!
Wear Practical Shoes: Ditch those sandals and opt for comfortable, and most importantly supportive footwear. Your feet (and spine) will thank you after a long day of shopping!
Lift Carefully: When picking up heavy gifts, bend your knees and lift with your legs, not your back. Keep the load close to your body.
Distribute The Load: Try not to carry too much at any one time. Take heavier purchased gifts or items to the car and leave them there while you continue shopping! If you don’t have a car, take a family member and/or friend along to help you carry gifts as you shop. This will help reduce strain on your shoulders and back.
Take Regular Breaks: Every hour or so, give yourself some time to sit down and take a break. This will allow your body a chance to relax and also relieve some pressure on your spine and feet!
Stay Hydrated: Drinking sufficient water throughout the day is essential in keeping your body hydrated when you’re spending hours on your feet shopping! It’s also important in keeping the discs in your spine healthy and preventing fatigue. Take a small water bottle with you, so you always have access to water on the go!
Take Time to Stretch: After a long day of shopping, do some gentle stretches at home to relieve any tension in your spine and feet. You can even download the Australian Chiropractors Association’s Straighten Up app.
The Christmas season can definitely be a busy time of the year! That’s why it’s important to take care of your body! Remember, seeing your local chiropractor is the best way to alleviate any additional pressure or stress that’s been placed on your spine. Happy shopping and wishing you a very merry Christmas with your loved ones!
